Should I get a website?
I’ve seen a lot of posts floating about recently from people who are looking to get into the industry and are asking if having a website is worth it.
I do understand the hesitation, as it’s an initial cost that some people might not feel is necessary. As someone who tends to jump into things a little too quickly, I can get quite distracted but the shiny pretty things in a project and it stops me from seeing the bigger picture and thinking practically, so I really wanted to take my time early and decide if a pretty website was important enough to spend time and money on.
I quickly came to the conclusion that yes… yes it is. We’re living in an entirely digital age and having an online presence is so important to getting a career like this off the ground. Your website acts as your online business card. It tells people you’re professional, you know what you’re doing and gives them a place to listen to your voice.
Having just completely redesigned my own website with the help and advice of some AMAZING people, I’ll share a few of the best things I’ve learned about making a good website.
• Don’t complicate it. People have incredibly short attention spans and they don’t want to click to different pages or navigate here or there to get to the important stuff. Have your demos immediately front and centre.
• You don’t have to break the bank. If you have the money, hiring someone to design and manage a site for you is great and it’ll likely look super professional, but it’s certainly not necessary. Out of the box options like Wix or Squarespace will do a great job and are very simple to manage.
• Make it yours. It’s a great idea to have a look at your competitors and get some ideas, but make sure potential clients get a sense of who
• It’s NEVER finished! When your lovely new voice over website is up and running, that doesn’t mean you’re done! Make sure to regularly update it with news or blog posts etc. This just let’s Google know you’re still alive! And your site will perform better.
